We use the 2021 National Occupational Classification (NOC) system to find and classify jobs (occupations) based on the training, education, experience, and responsibilities (TEER) they require.

For determining whether a position or a particular kind of work experience satisfies the standards of our immigration programmes, NOC codes are used.

Express Entry: You must fall under skill class 0, A, or B if you want to apply for immigration to Canada under this system.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot: Your employment experience must be at skill type/level 0, A, B, or C if you want to immigrate to Canada using the Atlantic Immigration Pilot.

Skill Type & Levels for NOC

The NOC Skill Type identifies the sector of employment. The NOC matrix includes the following ten Skill Types:

Jobs in management, zero

1 - Business, finance, and administration vocations

2 - Natural and applied sciences and vocations associated with them

3 - Careers in healthcare

4 - Jobs in the legal, social, community, and government services sectors

5 - Jobs in the arts, sciences, leisure, and sports

6 - Jobs in sales and services

7 - Operators of machinery, transport, and allied trades

Occupational Group 8: Natural resources, agriculture, and allied production

9 - Jobs in utilities and manufacturing

The first digit of most NOC codes identifies the Skill Type of the occupation.


Find Your NOC Code 2022

Canada's immigration division switched to the 2021 National Occupational Classification (NOC) system on November 16, 2022.

Presently, you need job experience that fits into NOC skill types 0, A, or B, which correspond to the NOC 2016, in order to be eligible for Express Entry. Experience, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will use the new Training, Education, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) system to evaluate work experience eligibility after the transfer.

*Take note that in 2022, a new 5-digit format for NOC codes will replace the current 4-digit format. Further unit categories may be added in the future if needed thanks to the new coding method's greater adaptability.
