In August 2018, the government of Nigeria's Bayelsa State opened Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa, in the main city of the state. The government did this because the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria says that State Governments have the power to set up colleges and universities in the country.

Bayelsa Medical University's main goal is to train doctors who can work in any part of the world.

We plan to reach this goal by forming academic collaborations, partnerships, and links with similar institutions both in and outside of the country, by hiring highly qualified and experienced academics from anywhere in the world, and by buying the most modern medical research equipment and facilities that will help us do our job.

We work with professionals and experts in the field of medical science to create ICT-based teaching and learning experiences for our valued pupils.

The University made a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA to train both the teaching and non-teaching staff of the Bayelsa Medical University. This was done with the help of the Bayelsa State Government. The Erasmus program of the European Union and the Apollo Hospital in India are being used to help Bayelsa Medical University and move it forward.

All of these are meant to give our students up-to-date medical information and skills that will give them an edge in the job market when they graduate. We are committed to overcoming the problems that come with giving people all over the world good, professional health care.
