How to Get a Canadian Work Permit to Work

A Work Permit to Work in Canada – Canada gives out hundreds of thousands of work permits around the world every year because it wants to attract talented people from around the world and meet social and economic goals. The work permits to allow foreign workers to meet Canada’s labor market needs, strengthen cultural ties, and keep families together. Because of this, Canada has more than 100 ways to get a permit. There are two programs for each of these two paths.

  • They are the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)
  • International Mobility Program.

The Program for Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWP)

The Temporary Worker Program’s mission is to remedy Canada’s work shortages, as its name implies. Notably, the Canadian government mandates that firms provide full disclosure when hiring a foreign worker due to the country’s requirement for a minimum number of qualified workers.

Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

The Labor Market Impact Assessment is where the competency of the foreign workers is demonstrated after reporting the amount of foreign workers employed (LMIA). This verification is carried out to make sure that foreign workers provide Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada with work permits (IRCC). The International Mobility Program (IMP), which enables foreign workers who are registered here to apply for IRCC, also advances Canada’s economic and social interests. However, it is not necessary for a foreign worker to be registered under LMIA; as a result, foreign workers who wish to visit Canada for a brief time in order to work are free to do so.

Free trade agreements and domestic policy considerations in Canada, such as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which enables Mexican and American citizens to work in Canada without the LMIA, are to blame for the rise in paths that fall under the IMP. Additionally, the Youth Mobility Agreement between industrialized countries and Canada allows young people from throughout the world to work in Canada under the IMP. Since Canada intends to enable foreign graduates to gain local work experience so they may support themselves financially while they are in the country, qualifying partners and spouses may also apply for work permits under the IMP.

How do I get a Canadian work permit through the TFWP?

Easy. The employer starts the process of getting a work permit through the TFWP. The employer should make sure that there is a job opening and that no qualified Canadian worker is available to do the job. The employer then fills out an LMIA to get an evaluation, which should be either neutral or positive. When everything is done, the foreign worker sends the LMIA letter, the job offer letter, and any other supporting documents to the IRCC in order to get a work permit. It is important to know that every TFWP work permit is “closed,” which means that it is only good for one employer. Foreign workers with a closed permit can only work for the company that hired them and for a certain amount of time that the Canadian government has approved.

How do I get work in Canada under the IMP?

The employer or the foreign work permit that is covered by the IMP can start this process. If an employer has a job opening and a foreign worker under the IMP, they can hire that person. In contrast to IMP, TFWP says that a foreign worker must speak, work, and go to an employer they choose. Under IMP, they can usually speak, work, and go to any employer they want. But not every worker is able to do this.

Reasons why you can work in Canada under the IMP

• Agreement between Canada, the US, and Mexico (CUSMA)
Citizens of the United States and Mexico can apply because the process is made easier for them when they want to work in Canada.
• Transfers within a company
Employers can move foreign workers to their offices in Canada through intra-company transfers, depending on the agreements that were made.

• TV shows and movies
Since the TV and film industries are growing, they are always looking for workers to work in them.

• Business People
Foreign workers who can show that they won’t stay in Canada for more than six months and won’t be able to get a job without a permit are allowed to work in Canada without a permit.

• International Experience Canada
Over 30 countries have signed different treaties and agreements with Canada. The agreement lets young people get the work experience they need to live in Canada.

• Bridging Open Work Permit: Skilled workers who are eligible and want to live in Canada can apply for the Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) while their application to become a permanent resident is being processed. Also, if they live in Canada and are married or eligible, partners or spouses of Canadian citizens or permanent residents can get a BOWP.
• Post-Graduation Work Permit: The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of the most common work permits in IMP. A three-year PGWP permit can be given to any international graduate from a Canadian university or college who meets the requirements.
