Duties

Massage therapists may learn different ways to give massages, but in general, they:

evaluate clients to figure out the best ways to treat them

clients should be told about the steps, risks, and benefits

Tell clients that they can refuse, stop, or change procedures at any time. Use the right massage techniques, such as

manipulation of soft tissue

relaxation techniques

stretch soft tissue

putting pressure on certain parts of the body by hand

hydrotherapy

manual stripping or friction between muscle fibers

Therapy for trigger points

play together and get ready

Drainage of lymph

myofascial release.

suggest suitable home care (such as techniques for postural improvement and stretching, strengthening, relaxation, and rehabilitative exercises)

consult with other health care providers (like physiotherapists, chiropractors, doctors, and psychologists) to come up with treatment plans.

get treatment records, keep them up to date, and store them safely. Fill out reports and answer insurance company questions

Working Conditions

Massage therapists can work on their own or as part of a team of healthcare professionals from different fields. They usually only work with one client at a time. Often, therapists have to help clients get on and off the table. People who go to client offices and homes must lift and move equipment that weighs up to 20 kilograms.

The work can be hard on your body. It takes a lot of standing for a long time. The hours of work depending on the work setting and the therapist. Some massage therapists work nights, weekends, and holidays. Some people work part-time in more than one place.

A massage therapist works full time if they give 5 massages a day for 5 days. That's about 25 hours' worth of work.

Educational Requirements

In Alberta, massage therapists do not practice in a medically regulated field.

Some localities demand that massage therapists submit a yearly police security clearance form or obtain a local bylaws-based license.

The student must enroll in a program offering 2,200 hours of instruction in order to become a member of the massage association and submit claims for health insurance.

Numerous private vocational institutions in Alberta provide training programs, frequently specializing in certain massage techniques

Prospective massage therapists should talk to persons who are already employed in this area about their schooling alternatives before selecting a training program.

To stay current with their field, massage therapists should take part in regular professional development programs. As required, continuing education courses may be made available.

Certification Requirements

In Alberta, there is currently no provincial law that governs this profession.

Wage & Salary

The number of clients, location, and employment type all affect this profession's salary range. Massage therapists can bill between $45 and $70 for a half-hour session and between $65 and $120 for an hour session (2018 estimates).

20 to 30 client hours are billed by massage therapists each week.

Massage therapists who contract with clinics receive a share of the billings, typically 60%.
