8 Advantages And Disadvantages of Friction

In this article, I will talk about the pros and cons of contact. Friction at the ground keeps a person from falling when they walk on a road. Also, when two solids are touching, the roughness of their sides makes it hard for them to slide over each other.

What's friction?

Friction is a force that works at the gap between two things that are touching and tends to stop one thing from moving over the other. This doesn't show up unless there is relative motion or a cause that makes motion more likely.

Here is a list of the laws of friction.

1. The force of friction between two objects works against their movement.

2. When the normal reaction is steady, the frictional force is the same no matter how much surface area is touching.

3. In the case of static friction, the limiting force of friction is equal to the normal response.

Types of Friction

There are two types of friction; they are:

1. The static or limiting friction

2. The kinetic or dynamic friction

Limited friction is the amount of resistance between two surfaces when one is about to move relative to the other while the other surface stays still.

Kinetic friction is the friction between two objects that are moving relative to each other at the same speed.

Friction relies on:

1. The surfaces that are in contact with each other, such as whether they are rough, smooth, polished, wet, or dry.
2. It changes directly with the standard force pressing the surface together. F = NR

Advantages of Friction

Some ways friction can be used are:

1. It lets the brakes stop the car and lets the engine move the train.
The friction between our feet and the ground makes it easier for us to walk without falling.
3. We can hold on to things because of friction.
4. It helps move the different parts of the machine around.
The ladder stays in place on the wall because there is friction between the ladder and the wall.
5. It is used to sharpen knives and chisels on grindstones.
6. It holds a screw or nail in place after it has been put in.
7. It is used in tools to make fan belts that go over wheels or pulleys.

Disadvantages of Friction

1. When machine and engine parts rub against each other, this is called friction.
2. It makes a machine work less well. It throws away useful energy when it turns them into heat.
3. It slows down movement.
4. It causes engines to heat up. This is because the energy needed to get past friction is turned into heat.

Methods of Reducing Friction

1. Three ways of reducing friction are:
2. The use of lubricants like oil, grease, air, and graphite
3. The use of ball or roller bearings
4. The streamlining of body shapes of moving objects
