Definition And Features Of Semi Formal Letter

A semi-formal letter is somewhere between a business letter and a casual letter. In one of my pieces, I explain that a formal letter is one that is written for an official reason, while an informal letter is one that is written to a friend. But semiformal letters are made to people we don't know very well or to people we don't know at all. For example, parents might write messages to the school principal, teachers, family doctors, or work bosses.

This type of letter can only be figured out by what it looks like and how it is written (in everyday language). This letter is written in a more polite way than an informal message.

Features of Semi-Formal Letter

1. Writer’s address and date

2. Salutation e.g. Dear Dr. John, Dear Mrs. Olumide.

3. Body of the letter

4. Conclusion

5. Complimentary clause

6. Writer’s full name.

7. Writer's address: This should be in the upper right corner of your letter, right after the date.

Salutation: It comes right after the address of the writer. Here you would write Dear Dr. Faith or Dear Mrs. Gift.

Body of the letter:  This is generally broken up into an introduction, the main body, and a conclusion. The wording is not formal, and anyone can say what they want.

Main body of your letter is where you will put the message you want to send or the major reason you are writing the letter.

Complimentary clause. The clause that gives praise. This is where the letter ends. 'Yours truly' is a common way to end a nice letter. Yours truly, followed by your full name, is a good way to do it. In a semiformal letter, you don't have to sign your name.
