About Two Million Nigerians Receive N5,000 in Cash Each Month - FG
According to the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, 1,940,004 poor Nigerians are currently gaining access to its cash transfer programmes.
This was said today by Hajia Sadiya Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, during a one-day stakeholder retreat on the National Social Investment (Establishment) Bill that was hosted by the Senate Committee on Social Duties.
She claims that recipients of the project receive N5,000 cash presents each month. Farouq stated that the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) Establishment Bill's goal was to provide a statutory and institutional framework for carrying out the National Social Investment Programme, which was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Nasir Gwarzo.
The Minister described how President Buhari established NSIP in 2016 to combat social and economic inequality and reduce poverty among Nigerians.
Four of the government's social support schemes, according to Farouq, are designed to give the most vulnerable and impoverished Nigerians the tools they need to raise their level of living.
She said that the NSIP's four cluster activities, directly and indirectly, influenced the lives of disadvantaged Nigerians.
The N-Power Programme, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, National Home Grown School Feeding Programme, and Conditioner Cash Transfer Programme, according to her, are some of these.
She added that the programmes were created to act as various kinds of social safety nets, focusing in particular on those at the bottom of the social ladder who need assistance in order to enable them to become contributing members of society and stop more people from falling into poverty.
The decrease of poverty, education, health, social inclusion, and empowerment are just a few of the Sustainable Development Goals that may be accomplished with the NSIP, the speaker continued.
According to Section 17(3) of the constitution, the State is required to direct its policies towards making sure that all of its inhabitants, without exception, have the chance to secure adequate means of subsistence and that, among other things, provisions be made for public assistance in meritorious cases of need.
Legislation supports all of the contributory social protection programmes, including the pension plan, health insurance, and social insurance. The National Health Insurance Authority Act, the Pension Reform Act, and The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund Act are the relevant laws.
The lack of a supporting piece of legislation for the NSIP, a non-contributory social protection programme, highlights the requirement for such legislation. The N-Power Programme has empowered one million youngsters since the NSIP's beginning in 2015, and another 500,000 are currently through various courses under the programme, which has been approved by the President.
She mentioned that 1,975,381 vulnerable and low-income households from the National Social Register had been added to a National Beneficiary Register due to the cash transfer.
She continued by saying that the Cash Transfer helps the weak and poor increase consumption and learn how to save money in order to lessen poverty and increase their resilience to shocks.

Buhari's administration has decreased the number of out-of-school youth nationwide.
Farouq claims that the federal government has decreased the number of out-of-school kids nationwide during the past few years.
"Due to the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme, public primary schools all around the nation have seen an extraordinary increase in new enrollments.
In more than 66,000 public schools throughout Nigeria, the programme currently feeds 10 million students. According to the minister, the plan is steadily lowering the number of children who are not attending school worldwide.
She claims that 2,653,333 beneficiaries from the three moni (trader, market, and farmer) groups have used GEEP loans.
A total of 1,142,783 people from all around the nation have signed up to participate in the second phase of GEEP under the three loan programmes, she stated.
For his part, Senator Yusuf Yusuf, the chairman of the Senate panel, noted that the retreat was intended to bring together important players from the executive branch of government to be on an equal footing with the legislative about the proposed law.
"Information is a very important tool for legislation," declared Yusuf. We invited key stakeholders from the ministry and other agencies because legislation is the source of government policy, and their input will be crucial in helping the committee create a strong piece of legislation for the NSIP establishment.
