What Is Cultism In Civic Education And Its Effects
In this piece, I'll talk about what cultism is, how it affects people, and what kinds of cults there are. Cults have become a big social problem in Nigerian colleges and universities because their actions and ways of running are usually kept secret.
What is Cultism in Civic Education
A cultism is a group of people who do rituals together and keep their membership, initiation, rules, and actions secret.
It can also be thought of as a type of organization whose activities are not only kept secret from everyone else, but are also done at strange times of day and often go against the norms and ideals of everyday life.
Ajayi (2015) gives the following general definition: Cultism is a ritual practiced by a group of people whose membership, admission, rules, and initiation procedures, as well as their way of running things, are done in secret and kept secret. Their actions have bad effects on both members and people who are not in the group.
1. Poor Academic: Performance: In school, they don't do well in their classes. Cult members also tend to spend more time on campus. They always did things at night instead of studying, which hurt their grades and generally made them stay on campus longer because they had to make up work. Also, cults stop giving exams because they are afraid of being killed by members of other cults or being caught by the police. So, they automatically spill over into the next year and have to ask for carry-overs. Almost all of the times when cults fight are during test times.
2. Expulsion from School: Tertiary institutions don't like cult activities very much, so if a student is found to be part of a cult, they are generally kicked out of school.
3. Life of Insecurity: A cultist's life is full of worry. He doesn't know when the next big fight will be. Big fights can happen at any time and any place.
4. Threat to Family: Cult fights have even happened at the homes of rival cult members, outside of the Campuses' fences. A lot of cult family members have been killed at their homes because their sons ran away. This was done by both their own cult group and a rival cult group that was fighting over who was in charge.
5. Mortgage of Liberty: The oath you take during the initiation means that you have given the cult group your liberty, freedom, and everything else about yourself. Allegiance to the leader of the group is complete. This means that a cultist doesn't have power over his or her life and that, to a certain extent, the cult's leaders can tell or decide what its members do.
