What is home Care Service?
“Home and community care” services help people get care at home instead of in a hospital or long-term care facility and live as independently as possible in the community. Home and community care are given by licensed healthcare workers (like nurses), non-licensed workers, volunteers, friends, and family.
What Health Canada does
The Canada Health Act does not cover home care services the same way it covers hospital and doctor services. In Canada, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments provide most home and community care services. Through transfer payments, the federal government helps pay for health and social services. The federal government also helps First Nations people who live on reserves and Inuit people who live in certain communities. It also helps members of the military and the RCMP, federal prisoners, and eligible veterans. Health Canada is doing research and policy analysis on home care and care in the community all over Canada.
Goals
The goals of home Care Services in the community are:
1. Help people keep or improve their health and quality of life.
2. Help people stay as independent as possible.
3. Help families deal with the care needs of a family member.
4. Help people stay at home or go back home and get the treatment, rehab, or palliative care they need.
