Top 5 Largest States in Nigeria


1. Borno State: With a land area of 72,600 sq km, Borno State is the largest state in the federation. It is located between latitudes 100N and 140N and longitudes 11030'E and 14045'E. Over 5 million people are thought to reside in the state. The state's two main vegetation zones are Sudan Savannah in the south, which is scrubby vegetation with tall tree woods, and Sahel in the north, which has severe desert encroachment covering much of the Chad Basin areas. Borno Central Senatorial District, Borno South Senatorial District, and Borno North Senatorial District are the three senatorial districts of the state.


2. Niger State: On February 3, 1976, the dissolved North Western state was transformed into one of Nigeria's 36 states, Niger. One of Nigeria's largest states, Niger State accounts for around 8.6 million hectares (68,900 km2), or 9.3% of the nation's total land area. The State is located between latitudes 80° and 11°30' north and 03°30' and 07°40' east. The State Is Bordered By Zamfara State To The North, Kebbi State To The West, Kogi State To The South, Kwara State To The South West, Kaduna State To The North-East, And FCT To The South-East.


3. Taraba State: This state is located roughly between 6030 and 9036 north latitude and 9010 and 9050 east longitude. In the north-east, it is bordered by Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa States; in the north-central, it is bordered by Plateau State. The states of Nasarawa and Benue also border the state to the north and centrally, and to the south and southeast, it shares an international border with the Republic of Cameroun. One of Nigeria's largest states, Taraba State has an area of around 56,200 square kilometers.


4. Bauchi State: From Nigeria's North Eastern State, state was formed in 1976. One of the states in Northern Nigeria, Bauchi State encompasses the Sudan Savannah and the Sahel Savannah, two separate ecological zones. It has a 49,119 sq km land area.


5. Yobe State: On August 27, 1991, the Federal Military Administration, then headed by retired army general Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, established the state, which takes its name from the River Yobe. Yobe has a political system made up of 178 wards and 17 local government bodies. There are 14 emirate councils in total. Damaturu serves as its capital. With Borno State to the east, Gombe State to the south, Bauchi State to the west, Jigawa State to the northwest, and the Niger Republic to the north, the state has a total area of approximately 46,609 square kilometers.

1. Lagos State: The State [Creation and Transitional Provisions] Decree No. 14 of 1967, which reorganized the Nigerian Federation into 12 States, founded Lagos State on May 27, 1967. The State is situated on the slender plain of the Bight of Benin in the southwestern region of Nigeria. The State, which stretches over 180 kilometers along the Guinea Coast of the Bight of Benin on the Atlantic Ocean, is roughly located on longitude 20 42'E and 32 2'E, respectively, and between latitudes 60 22'N and 60 2'N. It is bordered in the north and east by the Ogun State of Nigeria, and in the west by the Republic of Benin. Lagos State, with a 3600 sq km land area, is the smallest state in Nigeria.
