How to Immigrate to Canada from Nigeria in 2023

Nigeria is the fourth largest country from which people come to live in Canada.

In 2021, Canada gave permanent residency to more than 15,000 people from Nigeria.

Nigerians often choose to move to Canada because the country has a lot of economic opportunities and sectors for Nigerian professionals, such as the oil and gas sector, the information and communication technology sector, the health sector, and other fields related to science and engineering. So, it shouldn't be a surprise that most Nigerians who move to Canada do so as skilled workers in the economic class.

Nigerians are usually good candidates for Canadian immigration programs because they speak English well, have good educations, and have worked in the past. The Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Provincial Nominee Program are two of the most popular ways for Nigerians to move to Canada.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

If you are a Nigerian living abroad and want to move to the United States, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) may be a good option for you. The FSWP lets people who have worked before but have no ties to Canada or job offers apply for permanent residence.

To be eligible for the FSWP, candidates must be able to establish themselves in Canada using their education, work experience, language skills, and other human capital factors. In particular, candidates must be able to do the following:

1. One year of full-time or equivalent paid work experience in a skilled job classified as skill level 0, A, or B by the National Occupational Classification (NOC) in the last 10 years;

2. Validated language skills equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or French in all four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking); and 3. Canadian educational credential (certificate, diploma, or degree) or foreign credential and Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report.

4. Get at least 67 points on the IRCC's six ways to choose immigrants.

5. Show that you and your family have enough money to live in Canada.

The candidates will then get a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on things like their age, education, work experience, language skills, and more. The IRCC sends out invitations to apply for permanent residency every two weeks to the candidates with the highest scores in the pool.

The goal for Express Entry is to let in 110,000 permanent residents by 2024. So, Express Entry may be the best and fastest way for candidates from the economic class to get permanent residency in Canada.

Provincial Nominee Program

Another great option for Nigerians who want to move to Canada is the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). The PNP is run by most of Canada's provinces and territories. Each province and territory can make its own immigration paths based on its own economic and population needs. Through the PNP, provinces and territories can recommend skilled workers who want to move to their own areas.

Nigerians who want to move to Canada may be able to apply directly through a PNP, as long as they meet the requirements. They could also join the Express Entry pool and be asked to apply for nomination by a province that will choose candidates from the federal pool. If they are nominated through Express Entry, they will get an extra 600 CRS points. This means that they are almost certain to get an invitation to apply for permanent residence in an upcoming Express Entry draw.
